It is with much disappointment that I’ve learned my friend Jake’s commutation request was denied. According to information shared by Jake’s mother, Jake can’t submit another application until 2028.
I’m more than disappointed. Jake has served over 25-years for his part, his role, in the death of another human being. Jake has used those years thinking about the harm he has caused in everyone’s lives because of his actions, and how he can make amends through restorative justice.
What’s the meaning of restorative justice without restoration?
Restorative justice is just a fancy term for rehabilitation and redemption. It involves returning to the community, and repaying the debt he owes to society through actions that do not harm others but rather uplifts them and makes them better.
Jake is not the same person he was 25-years ago.
Jake is not the tormented young man he was a quarter-century ago when he committed his offense. He has pursued his education though correspondence courses, and learned critical thinking skills that have changed the way he treats others. Jake’s introspection and growth can be seen in his behavioral changes, and from the empathy he has developed for others.
Jake does not have any room for growth.
There isn’t much room left for growth and prosperity in the place which has become Jake’s abyss. Life without the possibility of parole doesn’t bring anyone back to life, or help anyone heal. LWOP is death-by-incarceration, and the antithesis of life.
The Michigan Parole Board hasn’t heard the last from Jake.
The Michigan Parole Board believes Jake can’t file another commutation application until 2028, but Jake can still seek review of the Board’s decision, and, recent legislation in Michigan has eased the barriers for obtaining a medical parole, for which Jake might be eligible.
